Troubleshooting Newscast

How do I subscribe to newsgroups in Newscast?

Before reading USENET news articles delivered by Newscast, you first need to subscribe to newsgroups of interest to you.  There are two methods for subscribing to newsgroups in Newscast, please see the two sections below to learn more.

Subscribing to Newscast newsgroups using your newsreader

If you are using the Forte Agent, Forte Free Agent, Netscape Messenger, or Microsoft Outlook Express 4 newsreaders, you can select your desired Newscast newsgroups in the newsreader and command Newscast to subscribe to the chosen newsgroups.  Currently, Newscast does not support importing subscribed newsgroups from Outlook Express 5.  Follow the instructions below to learn more.

  1. Open the Newscast Property page by right mouse clicking on the Navigator icon in the system tray and choosing Newscast Properties.
  2. Switch to the Newsgroup Import tab.
  3. The Newsreader(s) Detected section will show the supported newsreaders that Newscast was able to detect.  Select the newsreader(s) that you will use.
  4. The Advanced Options section includes a check box that says "Send list of only the subscribed newsgroups to Newsreaders".   This check box should not be selected.
  5. Click the OK button to close the Newscast Properties.  Launch your preferred newsreader that you selected in step 3 above.
  6. You will need to configure your newsreader to use your local Newscast Personal News Server (PNS) as the news server.   Please read the Configuring Your Newsreader topic for detailed information on configuring your newsreader.
  7. In your newsreader, subscribe to newsgroups you are interested in.  See your newsreaders help file for more information on how to subscribe to newsgroups.  When you have finished selecting your newsgroups, close the newsreader.
  8. Open the Newscast Properties page again and switch to the Newsgroup Import tab.
  9. Click on the Import button to command Newscast to subscribe to the newsgroups you selected in your newsreader.  A dialog should appear indicating that the newsgroups were successfully subscribed.  After this, switch to the Newsgroups tab to verify that the newsgroups appear as "Subscribed Public Newsgroups".

Newscast is now configured to receive USENET news articles from the newsgroups you have selected.  Use your newsreader as you normally would to read articles.  Note that Newscast delivers news articles as they are received so it may take some time, depending on the newsgroups you have selected, to receive articles.

Subscribing to Newscast newsgroups using the Newscast Properties page

If you are not using a newsreader listed in the above section, you will need to manually subscribe to Newscast newsgroups using the Newscast Properties page.  In addition, you will also need to subscribe to the selected newsgroups in your newsreader.  Follow the instructions below to learn more.

  1. Open the Newscast Property page by right mouse clicking on the Navigator icon in the system tray and choosing Newscast Properties.
  2. Switch to the Newsgroups tab.  Now you are ready to start selecting newsgroups of interest.  Use the Search button to search for newsgroups that interest you.  After a search completes, select the newsgroup that you want to subscribe to and press the Subscribe button (or Subscribe Public/Subscribe Protected button if a password has been configured).  Continue to subscribe to all newsgroups of interest.
  3. After you have finished selecting your newsgroups, switch to the Newsgroup Import tab.
  4. The Advanced Options section includes a check box that says "Send list of only the subscribed newsgroups to Newsreaders".   This check box should be selected.
  5. Click the OK button to close the Newscast Properties.
  6. Launch your preferred newsreader that you selected in step 3 above.
  7. You will need to configure your newsreader to use your local Newscast Personal News Server (PNS) as the news server.   Please read the Configuring Your Newsreader topic for detailed information on configuring your newsreader.
  8. In your newsreader, after you connect to the Newscast Personal News Server (PNS), you should only see the newsgroups available that you selected in step 2 above.  Subscribe to all the available newsgroups.  See your newsreaders help file for more information on how to subscribe to newsgroups.  When you have finished selecting your newsgroups, close the newsreader.

Newscast is now configured to receive USENET news articles from the newsgroups you have selected.  Use your newsreader as you normally would to read articles.  Note that Newscast delivers news articles as they are received so it may take some time, depending on the newsgroups you have selected, to receive articles.
