Configuring
Your Newsreader
The
Newscast server can be used with any newsreader that follows the
NNTP protocol. The Newscast server supports multiple newsreader
connections.
To
configure your newsreader:
- Enter
localhost or 127.0.0.1 for the news server
address. This is the address of your local machine.
- If your
newsreader requires you to enter a port number, enter
119.
- If you
have subscribed to protected groups, you should configure your
newsreader to log on to the Newscast server. The username can
be anything and the password should be your configured
Newscast password.
**
Security Warning: Once you configure a news reader to provide the
correct password and subscribe to protected groups, this group
list is available to anyone who runs the reader in the future,
even without knowing the password. Also, if some of these
protected articles are locally cached they may be accessible. The
password protection provided by Newscast only prevents
unauthorized people from retrieving group lists and accessing
articles in protected groups from the Newscast database - it
cannot control what material is stored by the news reader and
accessed from the news reader.
Using
the Import function with your newsreader
If
you are using Netscape Collabra, Netscape Navigator, Microsoft
Outlook Express, or Forte Free Agent as your newsreader, you can
take advantage of the newsgroup import feature of Newscast. This
allows you to subscribe to newsgroups in your newsreader and
simply import the subscribed newsgroup list into Newscast. Please
see the Newsgroup Import
section for more details.
